While technically not an actual sidequest, there are certain Yokai that will evolve whenever another one gets to a specific level. Likewise, you can also fuse two Yokai together to form a new one, or even fuse a Yokai with an item to get a new one; there are also a few items you can get by fusing two together. In order to gain access to fusion, you need to progress to Chapter 5 in the main story and do the Fusion Time! Request. After finishing that, go to Shoten Temple and speak with Mr. Zen to have the option to fuse.
Whenever a certain Yokai hits a specific level, you will have the opportunity of allowing them to evolve into a stronger Yokai. Note that you don’t have to let this happen and can refuse the evolution. If you do that, then that Yoki will get another chance when they level up again.
You play as either Nate or Katie, who while on a mission to find some bugs for a summer project, stumble upon a mysterious machine in the woods. Using it reveals a loud-mouthed Yokai named Whisper, who ends up giving you a Yokai Watch, letting him/her see the world of Yokai that surrounds them. It is now up to you to go around town, investigating mysteries, helping people out and making sure the Yokai behave themselves.
