As you explore the various areas in Visions of Mana, you will undoubtedly come across some ancient ruins that have high level enemies residing in them. In fact, as soon as you leave Tianeea at the beginning of the game, you can run into your first ancient ruins in the Charred Passage. These ruins are special, not just because of the strong enemies, but also because they house very powerful weapons within its locked gates. This page will detail the locations of all the Ancient Ruins, as well as how to unlock them.
Opening the Ancient Ruins¶
If you get all of the treasure chests in each of the areas, you will notice that the ones with ancient ruins will have a blue circle that you cannot quite reach, which will essentially stop you from getting a single chest in those regions. In order to get to those chests, you will have to do battle with all of the high-leveled enemies in the ruins. Each of the ruins will function the same, as defeating the enemies outside will extinguish the nearby torch, then light one of the ones by the locked door.
Defeat all of the enemies in the vicinity and you will unlock the seal that allows you to go inside the ruins. However, things aren’t done quite yet, as there will be one final set of enemies in there. To make things a little tougher, one of those enemies will be a Nemesis, so the battle will be more challenging. The Nemesis will typically be the same kind as one of the other enemies you fought at the ruins, although the Nemesis will usually have attacks not seen by the normal variants. Emerge victorious in that battle and you will unlock the chest, which contains one of the better weapons for your characters!
List of Ancient Ruins¶
All of the Ancient Ruins are found in areas that are in between the towns and other dungeons. For example, the Charred Passage is your first opportunity to see a ruin, although you aren’t going to be doing one at like level 3 or so.
All of the ruins will have single rounds of enemies to fight in order to open up the last area. The only exception to this rule is the ruins in Zawhak Desert, where you fight the little elemental slimes. Each set of enemies will be two rounds, so you’ll have to do battle with some reinforcements before you extinguish the torch there. The fight with the Nemesis is still just a single round.
Extant Miasopia Battle Guide¶
For the most part, all of the Nemeses you face in the Ancient Ruins aren’t all too challenging, as they aren’t particularly dangerous. However, Extant Miasopia is the exception here, as it is one of those cloud-type enemies. For starters, Extant is immune to all normal physical attacks, so you’ll need to do one of two things. The first is to simply use magic, with it being weak to fire and immune to water; the rest of the elements do normal damage. The other way is to bring Val into the battle and have him use Flame Saber to augment your characters’ weapons. He learns this skill from the Rune Knight class (Wind Vessel), with it being the third node. Doing this will enable your characters to deal damage with melee strikes.
Of course, that’s not the only reason that this Nemesis is annoying, as most of its attacks have the chance to inflict Frozen on your characters. Thus, it’s a good idea to have Null Freeze on someone, then trade in some Niccolo Coins to get Resist Freeze + (if you’ve unlocked that in his shop). This ensures that your characters won’t get frozen, although the latter ability still has a chance (Resist Freeze + only offers 60% protection).
