This is a guide for the first area in Tommy’s Dam in The Last of Us: Part 1. It’ll navigate you through the necessary steps to reaching the power plant and finding all Optional Conversations.

How To Reach The Hydroelectric Power Plant¶
Once you’ve made it out of the Suburbs, follow the path ahead and search the nearby car to find some Alcohol x1, Blades x1 and the El Diablo Handgun. From here, drop down on the left and follow the path ahead until you reach the bridge, then look in the vehicle to find the Foreign Element Comics. Continue following the path ahead until you reach the power plant.

Head upstairs and interact with the valve to create half of a path, then unlock the nearby door with a Shiv to find some Handgun Ammo x5, Explosive x1, Arrows x2, Parts x50, Alcohol x1, and Supplements x10. Exit the building and jump into the water, then dive down into the submerged building and free the wooden plank from the roof.
Where To Find The Hydroelectric Power Plant Optional Conversation¶
Wait for Ellie to get on the raft and bring her over to the opposite side, then wait for her to turn the valve and walk to the opposite side. From here, search the rubbish to the lefto for a Binding x1, then approach the grave to find to trigger an optional conversation with Ellie. Head upstairs and walk underneath the nearby tree and look to the left of the bulldozer for some Supplements x10, then search the cabin to find Parts x5, Rag x1, Blades x1 and the Power Plant Map.

Approach the gate to trigger a scene, then follow Maria and enter the building. Head over to Tommy and speak with him, then search the room on the left for Supplements x10, Parts x10, Explosive x1 and Alcohol x1. From here, follow Tommy outside, then speak with a woman standing watch for an optional conversation.
Where To Find The Smoke: Chemistry Training Manual¶
Continue to the opposite side and pet the dog for the Who’s a Good Boy Trophy, then enter the building. Collect some Supplements x5 and Blades x1 from the table, then pickup the Smoke: Chemistry Training Manual from a broken locker in this room. Make use of the Workbench in the other room to upgrade your equipment, then head downstairs and search the Storage Room.

Inside you’ll find Parts x35, El Diablo Ammo x1 and the Firefly Pendant - Ryand Oliverio. Enter the room on the opposite side for a cutscene, then you’ll have to defend the dam from a Bandit Ambush.
How To Clear The Hydroelectric Dam Ambush¶
Before approaching them, make sure you’ve upgraded your Melee Weapon and craft some Melee Kits, then slowly work your way through the area whilst picking off any bandits in the distance with the Hunting Rifle and the closer enemies with a Shotgun. After all the enemies inside have been dealt with, collect the Plant Schematics from the table, then head out onto the bridge.

Take the lower path of the bridge and remain crouched then when you get close to the enemy either use the Shotgun or Melee attacks to take them out. Once the bridge has been cleared, enter the building on the opposite side and take out a few more enemies, then approach Ellie and Maria to bring this portion of the Hydroelectric Dam to a close.
