This is a guide for the first area in The Outskirts in The Last of Us: Part 1. It’ll navigate you through the necessary steps to getting past the soldiers undetected and reaching the Downtown area.

Where To Find The Outside Optional Conversation¶
Once you’ve finally woken up from a much needed nap, take a look at the nearby table to find Tess’ List, then head into the other and speak with Tess to engage in an optional conversation. After you’ve finished talking head into the next room and turn on the generator by pressing triangle 
three times in a row.
Take the elevator down and look over to the right side of this room to find a Patrol Routes Map. Next up, make your way through the tunnel climb up the ladder to get outside.
How To Get Past The Soldiers Without Getting Spotted¶
(1 of 3) Grab the Tess List from table
Here you’ll want to follow the path ahead and climb through the truck to start a cutscene. Unfortunately, Ellie is infected and we can’t let that be known to the guards, so we need to escape the area quickly, so head through the hole and crouch behind the vehicle. Wait for Tess to begin moving and move over to the car on the left.
Drop down into the trench and sprint into the sewage pipe ahead, then drop down again. Here you’ll need to avoid the guards which are above you and reach the next sewage pipe. The easiest way to do this is to wait for the light to move away, then hug the wall on the right before sprinting into the next pipe.
Head through the pipe and drop down to the left, then look over to the right to find some Blades. Make your way up the hill and follow the path around to the right side. Wait for the guard to the right to look away and make a dash for the stairs, then quickly jump through the window to find some Binding before opening the garage door.
Hide behind the car in the center of the area and crouch walk over to the buildings on the right, then wait for something behind and wait for a guard to begin searching the room before going in and strangling him. Remain crouched and walk over to the truck at the back of the room, then sprint ahead to reach another sewage pipe.

Follow the path ahead and enter the back room on the left to find some Parts x5 on a desk and Blades x1 in a locker. Finally, head down the other tunnel and you’ll soon enough reach the next Downtown portion of The Outskirts.
