This is a guide for the first area in Pittsburgh in The Last of Us: Part 1. It’ll navigate you through the necessary steps to clearing the quarantine zone and finding the tools Level 2 Upgrade.

How To Survive The Ambush¶

After helping Bill get the car up and running you’ll find yourself in Pittsburgh, however before you can continue your journey you’ll need to deal with multiple Hunters that have attempted to ambush you. Keep in cover and wait for some of the Hunters to search the store you’re in and strangle them, then sit back and pick off the remaining enemies with your Handgun.

Once you’ve cleared the area, explore the store for some Alcohol x1, a Health Bar, Health Can and some Revolver Ammo x2 in the drawer. From here, search the building on the opposite side to find some more Alcohol x1, Rag x1, Binding x1 and Parts x8, then open the garage to continue.

Where To Find The Tools Level 2 Upgrade¶

Inside the garage you’ll be able to have an optional conversation with Ellie and find a Tourist Manifest, Tools Level 2 Upgrade, Smoke Bomb Recipe and some Blades x1, then take a look in the locker for some Alcohol x1, Binding x1, Revolver Ammo x5. Head upstairs and look in the first room on the right for some Supplements x5, Medical Training Manual Volume 1, Handgun Ammo x5, and Blades x1.

Enter the next room on the right to find a Workbench and the Ambush Map, then go through the blue door and drop down onto the street. Search both corners on the left for Parts x10, then collect some Supplements x5 from near the blue car. From here, head into the bus up ahead and pickup the Termination Shock Comic, then progress through the area and approach the car with a skeleton thats fallen out of the drivers side to have an optional conversation with Ellie.

Proceed further down the road until you hear gunshots, then get into cover and wait for the Hunters to pass before sneaking into the checkpoint. Before continuing, engage in another optional conversation with Ellie, then search right sides of the checkpoint for Parts x5. Enter the next area you’ll find some Hunters patrolling the area ahead.

How To Clear The Quarantine Zone¶

Hug the left side of the area and wait for one of the Hunters to pass the bus before going in for a strangle, then you’ll notice another guard roams the left side so wait for him to walk away and take him out. You’ll have one guard standing out in the open, so take him out when he’s also walking away. Next up, head down the alley on the right and wait for the guards to finish talking, then when he’s alone take him out.

There are a few more guards on this bottom floor, so the best way to deal with them is to remain crouched and hide behind crates or tables, then when one of them gets close enough, grab them. However, always make sure there isn’t any other guards nearby facing you. Once you’ve cleared out the bottom floor, loot the inside and outside area before going upstairs. You’ll be able to find the Traitors Flyer hanging on a wall outside, then go down the second alley on the right to find the Firefly Pendant - Mazden Risk behind a cabinet.

Enter the building from the main entrance and sneak over to the staircase on the right to find the Applicant Checklist. Enter the office on the right to find the Abandon Zone Note on a desk, then head into the storage room to find Parts x4, Blades x1, and Sugar x1.

Go upstairs and you’ll have to deal with four more guards. There’s two ways to deal with them, eiter sneak around the area and individually strangle them or get into cover and pick them off with the bow. Once they’ve been dealt with, explore the cafeteria for some Sugar x1 and Binding x1. Unlock the storage room with a Shiv to collect some Handgun Ammo x5, Parts x50, Blades x1, Alcohol x1, Supplements x5, Lost Area Map.

How To Enter The Pittsburgh Hotel¶

Go through the exit upstairs and drop down onto the street, then pickup some Alcohol x1, Binding x1, and Blades x1 from near the green containeR. Continue following the path and head up the stairs, then drop down and grab Supplements x5 from the container before going onwards. Once you reach the main street, approach the poster in the Laron’s Store to trigger an optional conversation with Ellie.

Head down the street until you pass a truck which has been taken over by nature and unlock the door next to it with a Shiv to find Arrows x2, Supplements, x15, Mothers Letter, Binding x3, Rifle Ammo x4, Parts 50. Continue to the end of the street and swim over to the wooden plank and dive down to find Parts x10, then push it over to Ellie and wait for her to get on before bringing her over to the bus.

Swim into the container and pickup the Stash Note from near the mattress, then inspect the bookcase to find Binding x1, Supplements x5, Blades x1. Finally, drop down onto the first floor and walk over the planks and enter the Hotel.
