There are a number of classes in Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Stole Time, otherwise known as Lives. Some of these are centered around combat, offering multiple ways for you to take out enemies. A few deal with melee combat, while some others have you dealing with your foes at a distance. One of the ranged Lives is called Hunter, focusing on the trusted bow and arrow. This page will go over how to unlock the Hunter Life, as well as offer tips on how to best use the class and which skills are the best to get early on in your adventure.
The Hunter is one of the Combat Lives in the game.
How to Unlock the Hunter Life¶
Like most of the Lives in the game, you won’t have to do much to unlock the Hunter, as it’s available from the very beginning. During the course of the early story, you will be forced to pick a Life in order to progress, after which, you’ll need to play out the Novice quest. After doing this, you can visit Auntie Anne at the Guild Hall in Eternia Village to pick a new Life. Note that you will get the option to skip the beginning quest for any Life after the first one, if you choose. There are no downsides to doing this, other than getting a brief tutorial on that Life.
Tips for Playing the Hunter¶
As already mentioned, the Hunter specializes in ranged combat, with their bow and arrow. Their basic combo will shoot a single arrow for the first two attacks, then the third hit will shoot a flurry of arrows. It’s important to note that each hit from that third flurry of arrows will be a lot lesser than the individual shots. As an example, the first two hits from a combo might be 100 damage, but the flurry of arrows will likely be doing 30 damage each arrow. For the strong attack, your character will jump backward and fire a spread of arrows towards the ground in front of them. To be honest, the strong attack isn’t all too good, so you might not be using it a lot.

The Hunter also has a charge attack available from the beginning, which is done by holding down the standard attack button. When you see the target circle appear on the ground, that means it’s fully charged. This move is great for a variety of reasons, one of which is that you’re impervious to damage while it’s being performed (the attack, not the charging up state). It also does quite a bit of damage and once you unlock the various status effects via the Skill Board, you can apply those ailments to enemies via the maneuver. The charge attack uses quite a bit of SP, though, so you cannot spam it.
Another thing that the Hunter has in their bag of tricks from the get-go is being able to dodge, outside of the dodge move that is base for the character. By pressing R1/RB/R on the controller, the Hunter will be able to basically do a quick twirl to get away from enemies. This move is also great for getting around while exploring, since it appears to be faster than sprinting.

Best Hunter Skills¶
Overall, there’s nothing that really screams “GET ME!” on the Hunter’s Skill Board at the beginning of the game. You will want to go south from the starting point to pick up the ailment nodes, since they can be helpful, plus there are some challenges tied to them. The path to the right centers on attack, while the one to the left will increase your defense and resistances. Going up and then right will unlock a Special Skill, which is kind of like an ultimate attack, so that’s a good and easy way to get some free damage (once the gauge is full). Just beyond that will be some increases to your critical hit rate, too.
