Most of the items you can gather in Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time are self-explanatory, as you either need to find it in the wild to gather it, or kill an enemy to obtain it as loot. However, there is one set of items that can be a little confusing, which involve the highest tier of vegetables, the Boss Veggies. The only way to reliably get these is by using the Farmer Life to grow vegetables at your base in the Present and hoping one of the bosses will appear. Read on to find out more about this in-depth.
Boss Veggies can be confusing, as they don’t naturally occur in the wild.
How to Spawn Boss Veggies¶
Before doing anything, you need to play through the main story until you unlock the Farmer Life, which naturally occurs after finishing the events on Faraway Island. When you’ve done this and have gotten the Life for yourself, you can start laying down plots of land at your base in the Present. Speak with Cooke in the guild office and select the Farm option, which will allow you to purchase some fields that you can then put outside on your island.
With that out of the way, you will now need seeds, which can be purchased from the merchant inside the Guild Office. Make sure you buy the correct seeds here, since each plot of land can only grow a specific crop. Once you have them, go to the empty lot and you should see an option to toss some seed down on the spots. To be specific and safe, you should plant seeds on every spot. After doing that, you will then have to water the seeds (this is important). With that out of the way, it’s time to play the waiting game, as it takes about 30 minutes of real-life time for things to get set in motion.

Head to another area and do something else while you wait. If you come back to the base camp and see a message about your plants, then you can check up on them and do some more watering. It’s at this time that you could possibly notice something special, which is one of the squares having a sparkling sprout. This will indicate that a Boss Veggie will spawn there, so leave things alone and water the crops again. Note that Boss Veggies can still spawn outside of this circumstance, but the sparkling sprout is a guaranteed one.
When you come back again after the second time watering the crops, the crops will be fully grown and you can see if your efforts paid off. If there aren’t any Boss Veggies, harvest them all and try again.
How to Harvest Boss Veggies¶
You got a tutorial if you did the starting quest for the Farmer Life, but it’s possible you might have skipped over it. Similar to the other Gathering Lives, you circle around Boss Veggies and can hit their with your hoe to damage them. However, what’s different is that there will be a meter above them, with four spots on them. To increase this meter, which improves the amount of loot you receive, you’ll have to look for red arrows on the ground around said Boss Veggie. Striking at these spots will allow you to move the needle on said meter.
(1 of 2) Look for the arrows on the ground and strike the Boss Veggie when they turn blue.

Using the maneuver similar to the Sweet Spot Search for other gathering Lives is what you want to use on the arrows first. This will fill up the meter very quickly, without damaging the Boss Veggie too much. Doing it this way will yield a lot of items once you’ve defeated the Boss Veggie. It isn’t too much of a difference than mining or woodcutting, other than the meter and striking the Dig-Dig Detector arrows. After depleting all of the Boss Veggie’s health, you will be rewarded with your crops.
