Final Fantasy VIII

Leviathan

By
Nathan Garvin

A water-based GF, you can draw Leviathan from NORG - not the NORG Pod or the NORG Orbs, but NORG himself. If you don’t acquire Leviathan from NORG, you can draw it later from Trauma. Leviathan’s attack, Tsunami, will deal water damage (base power 47) to all enemies.

Leviathan Abilities

By the time you acquire Leviathan you probably won’t be too impressed by its Mag-J, which it can learn, and Spr-J, which is already knows, nor by Elem-Atk-J or Elem-Def-Jx2. You should have all of these abilities on other GFs, after all. On the other hand, Leviathan can eventually learn Spr Bonus, which will increase the equipped character’s Spirit by 1 every time they level up.

Recover will fully heal a target, making it a useful restorative ability that’s always contending for a spot on your command list, while Auto-Potion will cause the equipped character to use restoratives (Potion, Potion+, Hi-Potion, Hi-Potion+ and X-Potion) when damaged. Might seem a tad wasteful, but since you can acquire infinite Gil and hence infinite restoratives, it’s a fine form of passive healing.

Leviathan has two refining abilities, Supt Mag-RF and GF Recov Med-RF. The former will allow you to refine useful spells like Esuna, Protect and Shell, while the latter will allow you to refine restorative items for GFs, which… well, it’s something.
