Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past

Buccanham (Present)

By
Jarrod Garripoli

Upon returning to the present, there are a few things you can do before setting off to the present version of Buccanham. Return to Aeolus Vale in the past and cross the bridge, approaching Fidelia and a boy for a short scene, then talk to them afterwards. That’s all in Aeolus Vale, so return to the present and go back to your house in Pilchard Bay for another scene with your parents. You’ve also accrued plenty of Mini Medals throughout your travels now, so Zoom on over to King Maximo’s Mansion to get some new items. Of particular interest is the Sage’s Stone , at 83 medals, which acts as a party heal in battle. Stick that on a character who is either fast or doesn’t have access to something like Multiheal (it’s not as strong, but it doesn’t cost any MP either).

With all of that done, it’s time to head to Buccanham, which is located a bit southeast of The Haven on the world map. The main draw of present Buccanham is that it has a new casino in which you can fool around, including some nice prizes. Of particular note are the top two prizes, the Sacred Armour and the Metal King Helm. The former will allow whoever is wearing it to regenerate some HP at the end of each turn, and this stacks with the HP regeneration from the Hero class. The latter, the helmet, gives a big boost to defense at this point in the game and protects from various ailments. The only problem is that they cost a pretty penny in terms of tokens.

The casino in Buccanham offers some great prizes (left). Slots are a good way to accumulate tokens (right).

Before you start getting distracted with accumulating tokens, there is a sidequest you can do here that will reward you with a Mysterious Fragment. To start, go into the casino and on the first floor, speak with the bunny girl by the stairs going down, who will mention a man that just claimed the biggest token prize. Now, go to the third floor and speak with the old man, then go downstairs on the first floor to be in a long corridor. Talk with the male NPC here, who will mention he sold the thing to the armour shop.

You’ll have to enter the armour shop from behind in order to talk with the proprietor normally. Her husband went to The Beacon, so head on up to it and you might as well get the treasures here, to save yourself another trip. There are enemies inside, with some few new ones, so look out for them if you’re looking to complete the bestiary. On the first floor, you’ll find a Medicinal Herb and Antidotal Herb in the barrels in the northeast corner. There’s nothing on the second floor, and there will be some Yggdrasil Dew in a chest in the northwest corner on the third floor.

On the fourth floor, you’ll find a Seed of Life in the southwest corner and on the fifth floor, there will be two chests in the central room ( Medicinal Herb and Mini Medal #85 ). Go to the final floor with the moving platforms and open both chests here for a Seed of Magic and a Magic Water . At the very top, speak with the man sitting on the ground and you can finally leave The Beacon for good. Return to the casino’s first floor and go down the stairs to the west, where you’ll find the priest. Speak with him, then return to the beginning hallway of Buccanham, going upstairs to the church area and up some more stairs to some bedroom.

Talk with the nun here, who will talk about the priest rummaging around all the time at the podium. Go to where the nun is that saves your game and use the Examine option from the in-game menu to find a Mysterious Fragment . Head back into the town portion and enter the house to the east of the inn. Break the pots, then inspect the bookshelf to move it, and go through the door to find a chest with a Mini Medal (#86) . The barrels just outside of the house south of the previous one has some Pilchard Crackers . The lady with the red dress on the second floor of the casino mentions something about a VIP Pass and receiving a special something…hmm, interesting.

Use the Examine option (left) to find the Mysterious Fragment at the podium (right).

Barring any gambling addiction, that’s all that you can do in Buccanham, so exit and head on over to the Den of the Dwarves. On the second floor, take the first split to find a chest with 30 gold coins . When you come to a set of stairs, take them down to a room with some pots ( Meaty Treat ) and two chests (both require Magic Key), with the chests containing 120 gold coins and a Mini Medal (#87) . Continue on until you get to Dinky Dell, which is a little bit different than in the past. Enter the first doorway and break the pots for a Pilchard Pie , then enter the room below to find the treasury that was there in the past.

Break the pots for 16 gold coins and some Horse Manure , then open the chests for a Pink Pearl , Seed of Strength ,and 50 gold coins . The last room you need to visit is the one on the right side with red carpeting out front, which is the king’s chamber. One of the cupboards here contains a Smart Suit , and you can get a VIP Pass by speaking to the king. Exit the royal chambers and check out the shops if you want, then take the ladder in the northeast. You can find a Seed of Magic in the chest in the northwest corner and you’re pretty much finished with Buccanham, so exit the den and it’s time to round up two more Haven residents before moving on.

The first one is located in Aeolus Vale, so Zoom on over there and enter the church. Speak with the boy there and send him on his way to The Haven, then Zoom to Providence next. Your next target isn’t in the town, but on the bridge to the southwest of the town. Luckily, there’s only one NPC here, so speak with the warrior-looking guy and send him off to The Haven. There is one more thing before moving on, which is to return to King Maximo’s Mansion and turn in more Mini Medals, netting yourself another Mysterious Fragment . Three more medals will get your a very nice shield.

You should have enough residents to have The Haven upgraded to its final iteration. You can get four more Mini Medals (#88-91) from there, upping your overall total to 91 medals. The first one is in a pot in the northeast corner, on the plateau, while a second can be gotten from a barrel inside of the Download Bar. There’s another inside of the house on the eastern side, in a pot, and the final one is inside of the cupboard in the house on the northern side. You will find a casino downstairs in the northern house, but the prizes are the same as Pilgrim’s Rest for now. The tall building houses more goodies, assuming you have StreetPass residents, which you can get from downloading Traveller’s Tablets. This includes a total of five new Mini Medals, but these are counted towards the total and they depend on how many StreetPass residents you have (need 16 to get the last two Mini Medals).
