Gai Amon Boss Guide - Like A Dragon Gaiden

By
Jarrod Garripoli

You’ve defeated the Four Kings, as well as Tetsu Amon, but you have one more ultimate challenge waiting for you in Like A Dragon Gaiden. That will be Gai Amon, who is the strongest opponent you will face in the game. He will make an appearance after beating Tetsu Amon, although you won’t be thrown directly into combat just yet. This will be a normal battle, not restrained by the Coliseum rules, so you will be able to use items and everything. This page will tell you everything you need to know about Gai Amon, including all of his moves, as well as tips and tricks to beat him.

Gai Amon will be your toughest challenge in Like A Dragon Gaiden.

Preparing for Gai Amon

As mentioned above, the fight against Gai Amon is a normal one, so you aren’t restricted by anything. That means items are fair game and you will definitely need them. Go around Sotenbori and to every shop you can find, where you’ll want to stock up on just about any restorative you can get your hands on here. If you didn’t do the Golden Balls side mission yet, that’s a good idea now, as one of the rewards you can choose gives you 100 Nourishment of the Sea Kings. This item will restore some Health and Heat, so they are definitely extremely useful.

You will also want to max your Health and Attack for the battle, as well as get as many Heat Actions as you can unlock. Due to a mechanic, you will never really want to try and use a Heat Action more than once. Additionally, you will want the best gear/equipment you can get. Ideally, the equipment we used was the following:

(1 of 2) Doing the Gold Balls side mission can get you 100 of these items.

  • Great Fortune Gold Undies
  • Dragon God Amulet
  • Dragon’s Binding
  • Chainmail

Once you feel like you’re ready, go to the Helipad in the Castle to find Gai Amon, confirming that you’re good to go.

Gai Amon Boss Fight

As already said, Gai Amon is the toughest enemy in the game and he comes out swinging hard. Gai Amon has two phases, with his first phase starting out with him summoning some drones. This set of drones has only one purpose, which is to constantly heal him. While you might try to outdamage the healing, the easier option is to activate Extreme Heat and summon your own drones. Note that if you switch to Yakuza Style while your drones are still active, they will disappear, so you will want to keep to Agent Style until all of Amon’s drones have been destroyed.

Thankfully, Amon will only use these healing drones once, so when they’re all gone, you won’t have to worry about them being resummoned. With that over, it’s time to talk about his other attacks. Note that Amon has a variety of melee attacks and trying to nail down all of the descriptions can get a bit tiresome, so let’s look at the non-melee attacks. Just note that you should never commit to full combos or the heavy finishers with bosses in this game, since they all have super armor and will power through them.

(1 of 6) Gai Amon’s drones at the beginning of the fight will constantly heal him.

Gai Amon has a lot of the same gadgets as you, as well as some additional ones you may have forgotten or not seen. After the initial set of drones, he can summon another set that will just come after you. These can be very hard to dodge, so just run away from them until they disappear. You will also see him try to use the Spider gadget on you, which will cause you to get tied up should it hit. Mash the button shown to break free, as Amon will usually flick an explosive cigarette at you while you’re immobile. Another move that he can do is fling out two little devices that all function differently.

One will release some caltrops on the ground (the one closest to him), and the other will be a smoke bomb. The former will stay on the ground and it’s hard to see them, but they will shine from time to time. The last gadget that he can use is the ring launcher, with this one shooting three sets that will explode on impact. You can easily dodge roll out of range of the rings. As alluded to above, Gai Amon has a mechanic where if you use the same Heat Action more than once, it will do a lot less damage. This is why it’s important to have access to a bunch of different Heat Actions, although you might want to save them for the second phase.

Once you get this health down enough, he will do the typical power-up bit that Like A Dragon bosses do. There will be a red aura coming off of him and he will stop using all of the gadgets now, instead concentrating on melee attacks for the most part. There is one attack where he’ll charge up some power, and then punch the ground, causing a big explosion around him. If you see this coming, then just dodge and roll away from him to avoid it altogether.

(1 of 3) The red aura indicates the change to his second phase.

The second phase has another annoying mechanic, though, which is that every time he hits you with an attack, he will heal himself. That’s why it’s imperative that you probably don’t waste Heat Actions on the first phase, since you want to make sure you can quickly finish him off as soon as possible. Study all of the ones that you can do easily, then you can worry about the more difficult to use ones after that. As before, just get a few hits in and back away, as you definitely don’t need Amon to do a full combo on you and replenish a lot of health back.

If you are having a hard time, you can always set the difficulty down and try it on Easy or Normal. There’s absolutely nothing gained from banging your head against the wall repeatedly trying to beat the superboss on the hardest difficulty, for example. Once you do manage to take him down, you will be rewarded with the War God Talisman. This piece of gear, when equipped, will gradually replenish your Heat gauge. However, by the time you unlock it, you will already have completed everything the game has to offer.
