PWT - Initial

The PWT or Pokemon World Tournament is located just south of Driftveil City. You’ll first visit it after defeating the Driftveil Gym Leader, where you’re forced to participate in the Driftveil Tournament . After that, you can rechallenge the Driftveil Tournament or new ones.

The Tournaments employ the common knockout style where if you lose once, you’re knocked out. Each Tournament has at least some rules, generally a set level for all Pokemon participaing (so all those above or below that level will be set to it) as well as sometimes having other rules.

Even so, you get a lot of freedom! It’s all pretty easy to grasp, so we doubt you’ll have much trouble. For all but the Download Tournament, you can play a Single Battle, Double Battle, Triple Battle or Rotation Battle Tournament, seriously increasing replayability and fun!

After selecting the Tournament you wish to participate in, you will be shown a menu allowing you to choose the battle type you wish to play the Tournament in. The menu options are listed in the order listed above, so it shouldn’t be hard to work out!

The number of Pokemon each trainer uses changes depending on what battle style is chosen. See the small chart below as to how to how many Pokemon all trainers in a Tournament of that battle style can use, including you. Note that you can’t use less than this amount, you must use the amount set.

Battle Type Number of Pokemon
Single Battle 3
Double Battle 4
Triple Battle 6
Rotation Battle 4

To actually participate in a Tournament, talk to the woman in green inside the PTW building, north of the entrance to take part in any of the Tournaments that can be unlocked before defeating the Pokemon League.

The woman in green will be standing to the left of the woman in red who you should speak with if you want to participate in any of the Tournaments that can be played after defeating the Pokemon League.

Driftveil Tournament

This is the first tournament you can participate in. If it’s your very first time, please check the Driftveil Tournament page in our To Gym 6 section. After defeating the Driftveil Tournament for the first time, you’ll be given access to the Driftveil Tournament once more, which now works in a different way.

The new version now sets all Pokemon that enter to Level 25 . This doesn’t matter whether they’re above or below this level. This means that you can’t rely on straight-out power, but instead actually have to win with intelligence. Yay for intelligence!

Other that, you can choose to participate in a Single Battle, Double Battle, Triple Battle or Rotation Battle style for the Tournament.

Rental Tournament

In this Tournament, you’re given a choice between an Attack, Defense or Balanced party. After you’ve chosen one, you will be given a random mix of rental Pokemon that will match the style you chose. The Pokemon of opponent trainers will also be a random rental Pokemon.

There is a limited pool of rental Pokemon that you and other trainer’s parties are chosen from, so it’s not completely random. All Pokemon in the Rental Tournament are set to Level 50 .

Other that, the only other interesting thing to note is that you can choose to participate in a Single Battle, Double Battle, Triple Battle or Rotation Battle style. Obviously because you’re given a random party each time, no Tournaments are at all alike, so it’s rather replayable.

Mix Tournament

In this Tournament, you can use Pokemon you want. The ‘twist’ is that just before the battle begins, you will see what Pokemon are in each others parties, as well as their order. The biggest twist is that you will be able to choose one Pokemon from your opponent’s party to use in your own, just for that battle.

Similarly, your opponent will be able to do the same for a Pokemon of his choice from your own. The battle will then commence as normal and each trainer’s Pokemon will be given back to him at the end of the battle.

The Mix Tournament sets all Pokemon that enter to Level 50 . This doesn’t matter whether they’re above or below this level. Other that, the only other thing to note is that you can choose to participate in a Single Battle, Double Battle, Triple Battle or Rotation Battle style for the Tournament.

Download Tournament

The Download Tournament is a special type of Tournament, and technically isn’t a Tournament at all. Instead, it’s a sub-menu where you can select from range of Downloaded Tournaments. Each one has special rules and a special theme, which vary depending the Tournament.

These can be Downloaded via Wi-Fi. To do so, use the green-screened PC next to the woman in green when your DS or 3DS is connected to the net with Wi-Fi. You will have a number of Tournaments that you will then be able to download. Feel free to do so and try them out. Some are rather cool!
