What Are Elder Rifts?

By
Nathan Garvin

Information about Elder Rifts in Diablo Immortal, including details about where to find them, how to open them, what Crests are, how they influence Elder Rifts, and where to get them, and how to clear Elder Rifts.

How to Start Elder Rifts

Elder Rifts are an activity you can indulge in for various bits of loot, but most notably it’s one of the better ways to farm Legendary Gems. Given the importance of getting ahold of vast numbers of Legendary Gems (the drop rate for 5-Star specimens is abysmal, and you need plenty of junk Legendary Gems to upgrade the ones you actually plan on using), knowing how to access Elder Rifts is vitally important to your long-term, endgame success.

You can access Elder Rifts via the Elder Rift Entrance, an odd device on a raised platform in Westmarch. To get here, progress the main questline until you encounter Lethes following the [Mad King’s Breach] dungeon. After that you’ll make your way to Westmarch you’ll have to complete the main quest objectives “Legends of Eld” and “Braving the Rift”, which will take you into your first Elder Rift and serve as a tutorial for the activity.

Unfortunately, getting inside an Elder Rift isn’t as easy as simply tapping the gate. You’ll need to empower the rift by using Crests. Jondo Mouren, the Crest Merchant, will give you your first few Crests for the tutorial rift (and incidentally, your first Legendary Gem), but others won’t be quite so easy to come by.

What Are Elder Rift Crests?

To open the portal to an Elder Rift, you’ll need to empower it using Crests. These come in two flavors - Rare and Legendary, and not only do they open the Elder Rift, they affect the course of gameplay inside. Rare and Legendary Crests will both add modifiers to the Elder Rift they empower, with Legendary Crests adding more modifiers than Rare Crests. These can be negative or positive, and the more Crests used and the higher quality the Crests, the more modifiers in play. This randomness typically works against you, and it’s fair to generally correlate more modifiers with higher difficulty, but more, rarer Crests also means you’ll have a higher chance of scoring a Legendary Gem. Only by using Legendary Crests can you obtain 5-Star Legendary Gems.

While Legendary Crests can be obtained at a glacial pace as drops or rewards, you’re heavily incentivized to purchase the game’s premium currency to buy Legendary Crests. It’s an arduous grind to get even a single 5-Star Legendary Gem, and without spending money on Legendary Crests you’re probably not going to be competitive with players who do.

How to Complete an Elder Rift

If you’ve played Diablo 3, you know how Rifts work. Enter the Rift and you’ll be committed to seeing it through, win or lose. Your goal inside a Rift is to kill enemies quickly to fill up a “Rift Progress” meter. Doing so will spawn the Rift Guardian, a boss you must then defeat to complete the Rift. The faster you fill the Rift Progress meter, the better your reward will be.

Generally to clear Rifts quickly you’ll want to avoid wasting time with the odd straggler and try to focus on groups of enemies. Unique enemies are especially worthwhile, as when defeated they’ll drop “Rift Progress Orbs”, which fill the Rift Progress bar much faster than killing normal enemies. In addition to the loot you’ll gain for defeating a Rift Guardian, the enemies you slay along the way will also drop treasure, as normal.

After defeating the Rift Guardian, you’ll have 5:00 to deal with whatever unfinished business you have in the Rift before it closes and you’re shunted back to Westmarch. A Blacksmith will conveniently also spawn after the Rift Guardian is defeated… just in case you weren’t attentive enough to your inventory and ended up overburdened.
