Letter for Anna of Schweidnitz Letters
Description
A letter from Francesco Petrarca to Anna of Schweidnitz.
Text
In Milan, on 23 May 1358
It is with gratitude and reverent joy that I have received your letter, most glorious Empress. I consider it a miracle that at such a young age and in such a prominent position, you possess the unusual and rare gift of wisdom and humanity, and have chosen to allow me, unworthy as I am, one of your many subjects in all the world, the privilege of sharing with you the joy of such a momentous event in your life.
For the birth of your daughter I thank not Lucina, as is customary, for the ancient pagans did not yet know the nature of the world, but Christ, the Lord of light and life and all that is good. I praise your maturity, which is a blessing not only for yourself but also for the whole kingdom.
Do not be sad that your first child is female. The Almighty did not create woman to be despised. Indeed, all earthly rulers have been born from women. And remember, those of humble beginnings are the most favoured by destiny.
