Sigismund's letter to Wenceslas Letters
Description
Letter from Sigismund of Luxembourg to
Wenceslas IV.
Text
Greetings to the most noble prince, Wenceslas, by the grace of God King of Rome and Bohemia
from Sigismund, King of Hungary, Dalmatia and Croatia, Margrave of Brandenburg.
We appeal to you with an urgent request. As we have already informed Your Majesty, the Turkish Emperor Bayezid has regained strength and is preparing an invasion. Together with our nobles, we are gathering troops for defense and hope that with God’s help we will be able to repel the power of the enemies of Christ.
As You are aware, our kingdom is a bulwark and shield for the rest of Christendom, and we ask you to call upon the men of Your nations to defend the holy cause in the greatest possible numbers.
We request His Majesty to communicate to us his decision by means of our cousin, Margrave Jobst, with whom we shall continue in close alliance.
In Budpest, April 3rd 1397.
