Early on in the Prologue of Frostpunk 2, you’ll learn about stockpiling, as you’ll need to store 40,000 units of food to complete the Chapter. However, the game purposefully leaves out important details which makes a significant difference. Read on to find out everything you need to know about Stockpiling in Frostpunk 2.
What is Stockpiling?¶
Stockpiling is keeping excess resources stored until they need to be used due to the increased demand for a specific resource. The increased demand could be from obtaining more population, the resources have run out, or severe weather comes your way such as whiteouts.
Stockpiling Resources¶
If you take a look at your resources at the top of the screen, you’ll see a small bar underneath them. If the bar is solid gray, you’re meeting the demand. When you see a golden bar with arrows pointing to the right, you have a surplus (more than) of the resource, and you’re stockpiling. If the bar is gold and the arrows are pointing to the left, you have a surplus, but you’re now using the stockpiled resource. Finally, if it has any red on the bar, the demand is unfulfilled.
When you have surplus resources, you’ll want to build a Stockpile Hub, so you can begin storing the excess resource for a rainy (snowy) day, especially when a whiteout occurs as it’ll be more difficult to acquire the resource when the weather is bad.
Stockpile Hubs¶
Each resource has a Stockpile Hub specifically for that resource. You can find the Stockpile Hubs in the aptly named Construct Hubs by pressing or selecting the icon in the bottom-right of the screen. Below, you’ll find every hub, and what they’re used for.
-
Fuel Stockpiling Hub: This hub stores any fuel source found in the game, which is Coal and Oil.
-
Materials Stockpiling Hub: This hub stores any materials you acquire, regardless of the type.
-
Goods Stockpiling Hub: This hub stores Goods that are made via Industrial Districts.
-
Food Stockpiling Hub: This hub stores any food resources you come across or farm.
Although there are other Hubs in the Construct Hubs menu, these are separate things that’ll help out your city, but won’t stockpile anything. Another important aspect of Stockpiling Hubs is that if you place them near their respective resource, they’ll have an area of effect that’ll reduce the workforce required to work on them. However, you must place the correct Hub near or next to the corresponding resource.
For example, place a Food Stockpiling Hub near a Food District, a Fuel Stockpiling Hub near an Extraction District extracting fuel, a Goods Stockpiling Hub near an Industrial District producing Goods, or finally, a Materials Stockpiling Hub next to an Extraction District extracting Materials. You’ll only get the bonus if the Hub is placed near the right District.
Increasing Stockpile Limit¶
In the Prologue, you’ll need to stockpile 40,000 Food for the upcoming whiteout. If you only placed one Food Stockpiling Hub, you’ll notice that you’ll stockpile some food, but then it’ll stop, and you won’t be able to stockpile anymore. This is because each Hub has a limit.
In the Prologue, the Hub can hold is reduced to around 15,000, but in the main Chapters, they’ll hold 50,000 resources per Hub. To stockpile more, you’ll need to build more Hubs in different districts to increase the overall amount.
Destroying Stockpiles¶
The final part of the puzzle is the big question, what happens to the Stockpile if you deactivate or destroy the Stockpiling Hub? Well, you won’t be able to store any more resources for obvious reasons, but you won’t lose any you’ve stored up until that point, and you can still use those resources until they’re gone.
That’s it for stockpiling. In short, if you have an excess of a specific resource, place the correct Hub near the district to procure the resource to begin stockpiling it. You should always do this, as it’s always best to have more and not need to use it than not having enough.
