Frostpunk 2

What You Need to Know

By
Ben Chard

Frostpunk 2 is the direct sequel to 2018’s fantastic city-survival game, Frostpunk, which saw you assume the role of Captain as you seek to survive the harsh winters of a post-apocalyptic earth. You return to New London as the Steward who seeks to keep the city running following the death of the Captain. Here’s everything you need to know about what’s new in Frostpunk 2.

Here’s everything you need to know about your return to New London in Frostpunk 2.

Return to New London as the Steward

As mentioned above, the story of Frostpunk 2 is centered around your role as the Steward, the new person in charge of New London following the death of the Captain from the original Frostpunk. Whereas you had absolute control of the city in the first game, this time around, you’ll have to deal with the Council and other Factions that appear to maintain order and plan a strategic future.

What’s more, you’ll be able to make use of Zoom Stories that allow you to hone in on the everyday life of New London, seeing how your populace goes about their daily tasks and taking in the marvel of what you’ve built.

Introduction of Districts

While in the original Frostpunk you focused more on specific buildings, Frostpunk 2 sees that scope expand massively, as you’ll mainly focus on building districts instead. This means that you’ll need to consider more carefully where you place them and what other districts are nearby. Placing a Housing district close to an Industrial district is perhaps not the greatest idea you could have, so making sure you Frostbreak enough of the area to give you the ideal building plots for your districts is key to survival.

On the other hand, placing a Housing District close to a Generator or an area shielded by the wind will give you a Heat bonus, nothing to be scoffed at during an eternal winter one would wager! These are just a few of the many facets of the new districts system in Frostpunk 2 and what you will need to consider at all times as you plan to survive your next Whiteout.

Constructing and managing your Districts are key to New London’s survival in Frostpunk 2.

Factions and Communities

As touched on briefly at the top of this page, Frostpunk 2 adds Factions and Communities into the mix as you plan to rule and lead New London in the right direction. Gone are the days when the Captain had absolute power, now you’ll need to keep in mind how your actions are affecting the various Factions and Communities. For example, pleasing one at the expense of another may see crime rise in certain districts, leading to civil unrest. Some of these Factions can be found below:

  • Foragers
  • Machinists
  • Thinkers
  • Venturers
  • Scrappers

This all plays together in the buildings that you choose to construct, or idea you invest in at the Research Center. Perhaps the Machinists want you to focus on Technological growth, if so, basing your ideas around that will help to keep them happy and offer you benefits there.

(1 of 2) Factions and Communities play a large role in Frostpunk 2.

The Council Hall

As you interact with the various Factions and Communities that Frostpunk 2 introduces, eventually they’ll gain enough influence that you’ll need to construct a Council Hall for their delegates to gather and try to influence the very direction of New London. You’ll hear many arguments that you, as the Steward, will have to rule over and propose new Laws that will go to the vote. This is where every playthrough of Frostpunk 2 can vary massively with all of the various outcomes.

The ultimate goal will be to try and balance all of the various players in New London, as should you favor or see one grow over the others, naturally, discontent will follow and could lead to demonstrations on the streets and even civil war!

Frostland Exploration

The Frostlands is the expanse that surrounds New London, and as you expand your city, you’re going to need to head into them to source new resources for your ever-growing population. You’ll have to organize expeditions to head out to the various territories and Logistic Hubs will play a massive part in that.

You’ll need to venture out into the Frostlands to help grow New London in Frostpunk 2.

As your progress into the Frostlands continues, you’ll be able to find new methods of getting out to them such as through Skyways, and you’ll be able to set up Outposts and Colonies in specific territories that are rich with resources. How you manage your Frostland exploration will play a massive part in whether New London continues to grow.

These are just some of the exciting new features you can expect in Frostpunk 2 and interacting with them is just the beginning on your new post as the Steward of New London. Good luck managing your resources and helping New London to continue to prosper.
