In Frostpunk 2 you can place Buildings in a District which increases the efficiency of that specific District. Sawmills are the building type for Extraction Districts, more specifically, materials. Read on to learn where you can find Sawmills, what Sawmills are the best, and how you can use them.
How to Unlock Sawmills¶
As with most Buildings in Frostpunk 2, you’ll find the Sawmill in the Idea Tree. You can access the Idea Tree by pressing or selecting the icon at the bottom right of the screen, to the left of the Construct Districts button. Inside the Idea Tree, navigate to the Resources Draw by selecting it at the top of your screen. Here, you’ll find Sawmills. Selecting Sawmills will give you a couple of different ideas to research, either Untreated Sawmills or Mechanized Sawmills.
Untreated or Mechanized Sawmills?¶
Most choices in Frostpunk 2 are down to preference and are more down to what negative effect you’d rather deal with, as both choices have one. For the Untreated Sawmills, your Disease rating will get slightly increased, while the Mechanized Sawmills will slightly increase Squalor. We prefer the Untreated Sawmills as Disease is easier to deal with in the early game, and it uses less Heat.
However, the Mechanized Sawmills are technically better as they will give you an extra 30 Materials output, but they require an extra 40 Heat. Although this may seem bad, you won’t need as many Workforce, so it balances out.
Advanced Sawmills¶
Once you’ve researched the idea for Sawmills, you’ll be able to research the advanced version of these buildings in the same area of the Idea Tree. The Pros and Cons of these Sawmills are the same as the previous versions, so all you need to do is determine which one meets your needs.
Do you need the 50 extra Material output, and do you have the Heat to spare? If so, select the Mechanized Sawmills, if not, then go with the Untreated. It’s worth noting that you can still research the idea of the opposite Sawmill you took from the normal Sawmills, so you’re not locked out of either.
How to use Sawmills¶
Before you can place Buildings, you’ll need a District. For Sawmills, place an Extraction District over Material resource nodes. Now, select the Construct Buildings button (), click the Extraction section at the bottom, and then select the Sawmill you researched.
Hover over the Extraction District until a beam appears out of it, and then place the Building. This will increase the yield of the District by the amount that the Building offers. Do this at each Extraction District to further increase how many Materials you get.
This can be done with most Districts and works similarly. Simply research the idea for that resource, place an Extraction District on that resource node (like coal for fuel), and then open up the Buildings menu and place that building there.
Always be aware of your Heat Demand and Disease or Squalor ratings before you do this though, as the more buildings you have, the more chance of Disease or Squalor rising, making it difficult for your city to thrive.
That’s it for Sawmills in Frostpunk 2. If you’re in dire need of Materials and your regular supply from the Districts isn’t doing enough, your best bet is to send Frostland Teams out on Expeditions to find a Material Settlement such as the Imperial Freighter, which is situated southwest of the Old Dreadnought, or the Dreamer’s Mine situated to the east.
This should keep you going for some time, if you still have trouble obtaining materials, set up Skyways to these settlements to New London to increase how often these supplies arrive. Also, make sure you upgrade the settlement to the highest tier.
