Heraldry is the doctrine of characters and symbols depicted on coats of arms, governed by fixed rules, and the relevant know-how was privy to nobles and knights.
It was a necessity, because Europe of that time had so many noble families, they simply could not be memorized. By applying heraldic symbolism and rules, however, the wearer and his dynasty could be identified from his battle pennants and coat of arms.
Simplified heraldic symbolism was also used on the arms and equipment of urban militias and the attire of soldiers of a feudal lord.
