Jan Zizka Characters
Text
One of the most famous and controversial figures in Czech history. The man who became the face of the Hussite uprising.
Unfortunately, only the last six years of his life are thoroughly documented. We know that he lost an eye in his youth and that in 1408, Zizka served in the sabotage unit of a certain Matthew the Leader and made a living as a bandit in the service of various nobles. According to some leading Czech historians, the activities of his band had more of a political than a material character.
From existing records, we know that when he was later arrested and sentenced, King Wenceslas IV granted him a pardon. There is a theory that at least part of his activities might have been carried out at the behest of someone from the king’s entourage.
His most famous historical period follows the outbreak of the Hussite uprising when he took command of the rebel forces and earned a reputation as a brilliant strategist and an undefeated military leader who led the Hussites from victory to victory.
