Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition is a remastered version of the original Xenoblade Chronicles X, developed by Monolith Soft and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. Announced on October 29, 2024, and released worldwide on March 20, 2025, this edition features improved visuals, updated character models, and integrates all previously paid DLC content from the Wii U release. It is based on the English version of the original, meaning certain Japanese-exclusive features have been removed, such as additional character outfits and some Cross customization options.
The Definitive Edition introduces new story elements that expand upon the main narrative, including a continuation involving the character Lao after the events of the original game. These story additions unlock after completing Chapter 12 and feature new music composed by Hiroyuki Sawano and Misaki Umase. Players can also recruit four new characters, including the Qlurian Neilnail and Liesel, and gain access to two new Skells: the Hraesvelg and a halberd-equipped Ares-type Skell. These additions provide more depth and variety to character interactions and gameplay.
Several gameplay improvements have been made to enhance player experience. A new “Quick Cooldown” feature allows for faster skill use, and an updated Overdrive Counter Guidance helps clarify Overdrive mechanics. The Follow Ball has been improved to help locate mission items and guide players more effectively. The game also introduces the “Floating Continent” region called Volitaris, and new Cross customization options inspired by characters from other Xenoblade Chronicles titles, such as Shulk, Pyra, Mythra, Nia, and others.
A number of systemic changes streamline the experience further. Players can now switch party members and change the in-game time from the menu, use a screenshot shortcut that hides the UI, and enjoy three manual save slots plus an auto-save file. Skells can jump without needing the Flight Module, and mechanics originally tied to the Wii U GamePad are now accessed via menus. The level cap has been adjusted to 99, and BLADE mechanics like Division Points and Field Skill levels have been removed for a more consistent series experience.
In addition to core gameplay changes, the game includes bonuses and collaborations. Early digital and GameStop purchases include the Exploration Support Pack, which provides credits, weapons, armor, and augments to help players early on. Nintendo Switch Online users also gain access to themed profile icons, and a special Tetris 99 collaboration during the 46th MAXIMUS CUP introduced Xenoblade Chronicles X themes, music, and visuals for players who achieved enough event points. These extras celebrate the return of the title and connect it to broader Nintendo experiences.
