Pickup the upgraded pipe to obtain the Melee Upgrade Recipe.

How To Upgrade Melee Weapons

In order to upgrade melee weapons in the Last of Us: Part 1 you’ll need to progress through the game until you reach the The Woods in Bills Town, then you’ll find an upgraded pipe sitting on the floor as you drop onto the street. This will give you the Melee Upgrade Recipe which will allow you upgrade your melee weapons so they last longer.

Next up you’ll want to upgrade Baseball Bat, Hatchet, Pipe, 2x4, Machete, use them to takedown the various enemies throughout the game until they break. Once you’ve successfully upgraded and destroyed all five weapons you’ll unlock the Build Em Up, Break Em Down Trophy.
