Alchemy is a great way to create helpful potions and poisons in Oblivion. Selling them can net you a good sum of money, but they’re best used in combat situations against bosses and mobs of foes. Here’s what you need to know about raising the Alchemy skill and mastering its effects with the right tools and ingredients. We’ve meticulously mapped out where you’ll find every ingredient in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and how it can affect your potion brewing.

Raising your Alchemy level¶
To begin using Alchemy in Oblivion, you will need a Mortar and Pestle that can be obtained during the tutorial. Once you’ve obtained it, simply select it in your inventory to open the Alchemy menu. Alchemy deals with the art of creating potions and poisons by combining up to four ingredients with varying properties. Ingredients can be found scattered across Cyrodiil in gardens, chests, and dungeons. Vendor NPCs also offer ingredients at reasonable rates.
You gain experience in Alchemy by creating potions with multiple ingredients. You can also consume ingredients directly for weaker effects (known to most players as Wortcraft). Poisons with negative effects can also be applied to weapons via your inventory. The higher your Alchemy level, the more powerful your potions and poisons will be. To speed up this process, you can also seek out Trainers like Sinderion in the basement of Skingrad’s West Weald Inn.
The race and class you pick can also affect your Alchemy level. Argonians, Bretons, and High Elves have a +5 to Alchemy while Wood Elfs get a +10. While all skills level up as you use them, classes with Alchemy as a Major Skill will level them up faster. These are the Assassin, Bard, Battlemage, Healer, Mage, Rogue, Scout, Sorcerer, and Witchhunter.
Level up your Alchemy to understand ingredients better.
Perks of mastering Alchemy¶
Each ingredient has four potential alchemical properties and you will learn these effects as your Alchemy skill rises. Here’s how your Alchemy improves as you raise its level in Oblivion:
- Novice: You recognize the first effect of an ingredient.
- Apprentice (Level 25): You recognize the first two effects and have a chance to create an additional potion.
- Journeyman (Level 50): You recognize the first three effects and can handle more simultaneous effects.
- Expert (Level 75): You recognize all the effects and always create an additional potion.
- Master (Level 100): You can create potions from a single ingredient and can handle even more simultaneous effects.
Vendors will sell tools and ingredients to you at a reasonable rate.
Alchemy tools and where to find them¶
While you only need a Mortar and Pestle to start brewing potions, there are other tools that can help you enhance your craft. Here are all the Alchemy tools you can find in Oblivion:
- Mortar and Pestle: This tool influences the value of the potions you craft.
- Retort: This tool improves the magnitude and duration of positive effects.
- Alembic: This lowers the magnitude and duration of negative side effects.
- Calcinator: This tool boosts the magnitude and duration of all positive and negative effects.
If you don’t want to lug around 16 pounds of equipment, consider dropping them off at one of your homes. That way, you can return to them after securing ingredients and craft potions in peace. Alchemy tools also have rarity levels and you can get Novice tools at any Mages Guild Hall in Cyrodiil. Rarity levels determine the price, duration, and magnitude of your potions. Here are all the Alchemy tool rarities and the player level at which they become available:
Quality | Strength | Level to find at Vendors | Level to find in Dungeons |
---|---|---|---|
Novice | 0.1 | 1 | 1 |
Apprentice | 0.25 | 6 | 5 |
Journeyman | 0.5 | 14 | 9 |
Expert | 0.75 | 18 | 13 |
Master | 1 | Never | 17 |
And here are the best Alchemy tool locations for you to explore in Oblivion:
- Echo Mine, Fort Ontus Understreets, and Moss Rock Cavern are your best choices when it comes to finding boss chests with Alchemy tools in them.
- Boss chests in Conjurer (Fathis Aren’s Tower) and Necromancer Dungeons (Fort Magia, Fort Ontus) have a 25% chance of having Alchemy apparatus. Meanwhile, Monster, Undead, and Vampire Dungeons have a 10% chance of spawning in an Alchemy tool in their boss chests.
- The upper floor of Fathis Aren’s Tower, south of Bravil, always has all four pieces of Apprentice equipment.
- The Gilded Carafe and The Main Ingredient in the Imperial City’s Market District are great places to purchase Alchemy tools and ingredients.
- The quarters of the Duke of Mania in the Shivering Isles expansion will have a Journeyman Calcinator, an Apprentice Mortar and Pestle, and a Novice Alembic.
- Crystal Chests in the Shivering Isles also have a 25% chance of spawning Alchemy tools.
