Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong

How to Unlock the Put in her Place Trait

By
Ben Chard

Information on how to unlock the Put in her Place Trait when playing as Emem in the Prince’s Quarter (Scene 01) in Vampire: The Masquerade - Swansong. This is a Trait that can be obtained at the very start of the Scene.

Put in her Place is the first Trait you can earn for Emem in the game.

Speaking with April Bosely

This will be the first Trait you’ll most likely earn in the game, and although you get it for failing, it’s one of the rare moments where you’ll receive a positive Trait instead of a negative one. As Journey and Emem reach the Prince’s Quarter, they’re greeted by April Bosely, who tries to exaggerate just how eager she is to see the two of them. Once she decides to lay down the situation to the two of them, you’ll get a dialogue choice where you can use a Discipline for the first time.

Discipline’s are your Vampire supernatural abilities, and they can affect a wide number of things in Vampire: The Masquerade - Swansong, ranging from seeing hidden objects, slowing down time, or simply dominating your opponents and bending them to your will. Each of the three protagonists will also have a Discipline that is unique to their Vampire clan.

This particular Trait is an easy one to earn, when speaking to April during the first scenes, she will say “If anything has happened over there, I’ll hold you personally responsible”. At this point, respond with the Presence option “Flatter her”, this requires 3 points in the Discipline, something you’re unlikely to have at this stage of the game but nevertheless, choose it and you’ll fail, with April claiming that Emem is way out of her league.

More importantly, you’ll obtain the Put in her Place Trait which is not actually a positive Permanent Trait. As a rule, however, gaining Traits from failing dialogue checks will often result in negative Traits, something you’ll most likely witness later in this Scene when playing as Galeb.

Select the Presence option here, even though you will fail it to gain the Trait.

What does the Put in her Place Trait do?

Now that you have this Trait, you may wonder what this actually does for Emem. With this Trait, Emem will have -10 to the next experience cost for the Mental Attribute, this means that it will be much easier to gain a level in that Attribute at the start of the next scene, something you should usually take up when you earn a Trait.

The Mental Attribute governs the following: When dialogue ratings are equal, the winner is determined based on a percentage. This attribute also impacts the Psychology Skill and the Dominate Discipline with points into the Attribute increasing your victory rate in these dialogue skills.

There is plenty more to see and do in Scene 01, and you can access more details about in the following pages:
